The Four Main Types of Computer Networks
There are a variety of computer networks to choose from based on their size and purpose. Modern technology allows computer networks to be customized to fit users’ specific needs. However, there are still four main types of computer networks: Personal Area Network (PAN), Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and Metropolitan Area Network. Here’s what you need to know:
Personal Area Network (PAN)
PAN is the smallest type of network, created around an individual’s needs. These networks are used to connect personal devices such as tablets, cellphones, and laptops. PAN allows your devices to communicate with one another within a limited area. Wireless headphones, mice, keyboards, and other Bluetooth systems utilize a Personal Area Network. This is a great network for those who only need connectivity within a short range, but not ideal for businesses.
Local Area Network (LAN)
For office buildings, schools, libraries, and other commercial buildings, Local Area Networks are used to connect computers so that files, applications, printers, and more can be shared. LAN is a bigger network than PAN, but still doesn’t exceed more than 5,000 connected devices. Not only does a Local Area Network work at a high speed, but it also is private, meaning there’s no outside source that controls it. LAN helps to keep data secure, organized, and easy to share.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A Wide Area Network manages several Local Area Networks, connecting one local network to another through radio waves & telephone lines. As the name suggests, Wide Area Networks allow devices to connect over a larger range, which is good for businesses with multiple locations. WAN is a pretty big investment and can be difficult to maintain, so its best to invest in skilled technicians to set up and maintain the network for you.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
MAN is capable of spanning for miles, making it the biggest type of computer network. A Metropolitan Area Network can be used for college campuses, cities, and small regions. MAN offers fast communication and excellent support to users by utilizing high-speed carriers. Though it’s large size can be of great benefit, it also makes it more difficult to keep the entire network secure from cybercriminals.
