What is Pharming and How You Can Prevent Attacks
In today’s technological world, there are so many types of cyber attacks it’s almost impossible to keep up. But if there’s one you should keep on your radar, it’s pharming.
What is pharming?
Pharming is a cyber attack that involves malicious code and fraudulent websites. An attacker starts by installing malicious code on your computer that automatically directs you to unfamiliar and strange websites without your knowledge or consent. Once you’re on the false websites, the attacker tries to get you to provide personal information so they can commit financial fraud and identity theft.
Pharming is typically known as “phishing without a lure.” If you’re unfamiliar with phishing attacks, these are attacks that occur through email. The attacker will include often discreet links, images, or text that lead to unfamiliar sites that ask you to provide your credentials. And if you provide those credentials, the attacker can access the real site, and steal your information there. The difference with pharming is that you don’t have to click that initial link to take you to another website. Instead, you’re redirected there automatically and the attacker has immediate access to your information. So yes if you’re wondering; these are scarier attacks than phishing!
How can I protect myself against a pharming attack?
A good first step is installing an antivirus and anti-malware security software. You want to make sure you get a software with browser monitoring, so you can detect malware threats and protect any of your devices from potential threats. It’s important to note that not all software protects against software, so do your research accordingly. This list of anti-pharming software serves as a great resource!
In addition to installing a solid software, make sure you’re using secure web connections (web addresses that start with https), and be cautious about opening links or attachments that look sketchy. A good rule of thumb is that if you have any doubt at all, don’t open it. We also recommend setting up two-factor authentication wherever possible, and using a credible internet service provider. In addition, use a VPN service that has reputable DNS servers, and create a unique password for your router.
How do I know if I’m being attacked?
There are typically two big signs you’re under a pharming attack. The first is if you’re experiencing an unsecure connection. Or in other words, your web address only says http, not https (the s stands for secure). The second sign if the website is looking a little off. You might come across a lot of spelling errors, weird fonts or colors, illegitimate statements or phrases, etc. Like phishing emails, some of these errors will be more prominent, and others will not. So it’s very important to keep these attacks top of mind as you navigate through your browser.
